Aim: To develop an index for quantitative assessment of the upper limb motor function in children with cerebral palsy before and after robot-assisted therapy. Method: An upper limb motor function index was developed using kinematic, surface electromyography and three-axis inertial measurements unit data collected from 15 children with cerebral palsy (CP) and 15 typically developed children.

Supplement, Vol. 54s, p. 73 (Juin 2015) The robot used in this study was a robot research prototype named REAPlan, which is illustrated in Figure 1A. 14 REAPlan is an end-effector robot than can move the patient’s upper limb in a horizontal plane via a handle that the patient can grasp or to which he or she may be attached by an orthosis if his or her hand is too weak. REAplan (Fig.1) is a distal end-effector robot that allows movements of the upper limb by mobilization of the hand in the horizontal plane. Movements of REAplan can be achieved in different modes (active/active-passive/passive). A screen is placed in front of the patient to provide him/her with a visual feedback of his/her mobilization.

Over 3 consecutive days, healthy individuals and chronic stroke patients (1) will be evaluated and (2) will train on the neurorehabilitation robot REAplan(R). They will practice several tasks on the robot REAplan (R) (bimanual version), requiring either movements with the affected arm (unimanual tasks) and complex, coordinated movements with both arms (bimanual tasks).
